Located in Kuusamo, Oulanka National Park is known for its breathtaking landscapes. The park is also famous for the popular Karhunkierros hiking trail, along which you’ll find many of Oulanka’s highlights. Haralanharju, Keisarinharju, and the Vehoniemi Automobile Museum – Kangasala

In Kangasala, next to Tampere, lies picture-perfect Haralanharju—one of the area’s most famous views and a core Finnish national landscape. A few dozen kilometers away is Keisarinharju, home to Finland’s first observation tower, erected in 1881. From Keisarinharju, it’s worth stopping by the unique Vehoniemi Automobile Museum—a great summer, autumn and spring destination for car enthusiasts and families. Recent visitors also mention the museum has its own ice cream factory!

 

 

Pallas–Yllästunturi National Park – Lapland

In addition to its beauty and great hiking routes, Pallas–Yllästunturi has invested heavily in developing various biking trails. Just an hour from Helsinki, Ruotsinpyhtää in Loviisa features the unique Strömfors ironworks area—an excellent destination for a summer day trip. Puu-Nurmes (“Old Wooden Nurmes”) in North Karelia is a lovely summer destination. It’s home to the Break Sokos Hotel Bomba spa, where you can relax in saunas and hot tubs. Hamina Tattoo is a world-famous military music festival held every other year in Hamina usually during the end of July and beginning of August. One of Finland’s quirkiest events gathers true “air shredders” on stage, and the winner is crowned the world’s best air guitarist. Saana Trail – Kilpisjärvi 

The magnificent fells and nature of Kilpisjärvi, Finland’s northernmost corner, have charmed travelers for decades. A highlight is the Saana Trail, a roughly 7-kilometer hike leading to sweeping fell views and the 1,029-meter summit of Saana. Plan about four to six hours, depending on pace. Lapland’s weather changes quickly, so dress accordingly. It’s a great day hike for those seeking Lapland’s beauty and a satisfying challenge—an unforgettable fell experience. Be warned though; the terrain can be very difficult during the winter.

Seinäjoki Tango Festival (Tangomarkkinat) – Seinäjoki 

Finland’s largest tango festival and one of the country’s best-known summer events draws thousands annually to enjoy top-tier tango and more. Downtown Seinäjoki turns into a village of music, dance, and life. Highlights include the song contest that crowns a Tango Queen and King each year. With a rich program of concerts and dances, the festival is a must for anyone wanting to feel the core of Finnish music and summer festival spirit. It’s held annually during the first week of July.

Ketunlenkki (“Fox Trail”) – Repovesi

Part of Repovesi National Park, a superb spring / summer / autumn destination for nature lovers offering over 40 km of trails through beautiful forest and lake scenery. Sights include lovely bridges and rugged cliffs, plus options like paddling, fishing, and hiking. Facilities are first-rate: shelters, dining canopies, fire pits, dry toilets, and tent areas. The Fox Trail itself is a ~5 km loop suitable even for young children. Highlights include the Lapinsalmi suspension bridge, hand-pulled Ketunlossi ferry, and the wilderness view from Katajavuori.

 

 

Pyhä-Nattanen – Sompio 

Pyhä-Nattanen (508 m) might not look special from afar, but its unique character reveals itself at the top. Giant, Lego-like granite blocks feel almost god-built. From the summit you’ll see a one-of-a-kind fell panorama unlike anywhere else in Finland. There’s a small day hut for a rest and snack. The circular route over the summit is 7 km—allow enough time.

Aulanko – Hämeenlinna

Aulanko is a lovely summer destination offering varied activities for all ages. Its park area is among Finland’s most beautiful—ideal for walking, cycling, and hiking—with a beach for sunny days and Aulanko Golf nearby. The hotel spa offers saunas and pools. From the granite observation tower, you’ll see sweeping views said to have inspired Jean Sibelius. Aulanko’s manor and historic spa have been popular for decades—great for families, couples, and solo travelers.

Haltiala Farm – Helsinki

Haltiala, a district of Helsinki, offers many ways to enjoy summer in the city. Forest trails invite hikers and cyclists, and Sipoonkorpi National Park is nearby. It’s also great for picnics, with parks and green areas like the Haltiala garden and outdoor pool. The petting-zoo-style farm hosts cows, sheep, pigs, and chickens. In summer the animals are outdoors from early morning till evening, and entry is free. There’s the Wanha Pehtoori café-restaurant and a grill area for your own food.

 

 

Mustio Manor (Svartå Manor)

A splendid summer destination in Western Uusimaa, the 18th-century Mustio Manor is one of Finland’s best-preserved manor houses. Legend has it the manor is haunted by a tragic lord who died with his beloved. Visitors can explore the manor’s history and enjoy its gorgeous gardens, with opportunities for hiking, cycling, and boating in the surroundings. Old Church of Petäjävesi

A wonderful Central Finland summer destination. Built in 1764, it’s one of Finland’s six UNESCO World Heritage sites. Constructed in the tradition of Finnish wooden church architecture, the interior is simple yet beautiful. The churchyard remains in its original state, and summer brings events and concerts. A must-see for those interested in Finnish history and architecture.

Vattaja – Kokkola

An alternative to Kalajoki’s dunes and Yyteri can be found near Kokkola—the nearly untouched Vattaja, one of Finland’s prettiest beach paradises for summer. The sandy beach stretches for 15 km—more than twice as long as Yyteri. The area also features historical sights like old stone churches and houses, with summer events such as Vattajapäivät and the Kokkola Venetian Festival. Perfect for visitors of all ages who enjoy nature, history, and diverse activities.

 

 

Neitvuori – Mikkeli

Saari National Park (Saaren kansanpuisto) – Tammela

One of Southern Finland’s finest summer destinations, right next to a national park, with beautiful scenery and plenty for the whole family. Accommodation options include cottages, tent sites, and caravan spots. Enjoy kayaking, cycling, and hiking, and relax on the swimming beach. There are historic sights too, like ancient burial cairns and old stone churches. The popular Lounais-Hämeen Pirtti restaurant & café serves a traditional Häme buffet on summer Sundays.

Nummirock – Nummijärvi

One of Finland’s most popular Midsummer destinations and the country’s oldest heavy-metal festival. Beyond the music, there’s swimming, fishing, hiking, and camping. The large, modern campground has space for tents, caravans, and motorhomes. Known for beautiful archipelago scenery and diverse services, including golf courses and boating. Recommended to visit during the summer months.

 

 

Saimaa Canal

Connecting Saimaa to the Gulf of Finland between Lappeenranta and Vyborg, the canal dates back to the 1850s and remains a living waterway. The best moments are at the Mälkiä lock—watch ships ride the “elevator”—and at the canal museum and trail winding among birch groves and historic buildings.

Tampere wouldn’t be the same without Pispala, the city’s heart of history and culture. Finland’s highest gravel ridge is dotted with lovely wooden houses, the Lauri Viita Museum, and superb views over the lakes on both sides of Tampere.
